Borouge opens specialty compounding plant in Austria

Borouge International has started commercial operations at its specialty polypropylene (PP) compounding facility in Schwechat, Austria, following an investment of more than EUR100 million to expand and upgrade the site.

The new facility strengthens Borouge's manufacturing footprint in Europe and increases the regional supply of specialty compounds. The investment also adds production capacity in Austria and further establishes Schwechat as a manufacturing and innovation hub.

Borouge CEO Roger Kearns said the Schwechat expansion adds production capability to Borouge International’s European operations and strengthens Austria’s position within its industrial network. He added that the investment would create long-term value in the company’s target markets.

Dr Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism, Austria, said the investment demonstrates the benefits of Borouge's presence in Austria, including additional production capacity, domestic value creation and jobs. He also highlighted the company’s Vienna headquarters and its partnership with Abu Dhabi.

At the facility, PP resins are compounded with recycled PP and performance-enhancing additives to create tailored materials combining low weight, performance and recycled content.

The expanded production capacity will serve several sectors. In appliances and household applications, the compounds provide performance characteristics and recycled content for manufacturers responding to market demand.

In mobility, the materials can help vehicle manufacturers meet the requirements of European end-of-life vehicles (ELV) regulations. Lightweight PP compounds can also reduce the overall weight of battery electric vehicles and their associated environmental impact.

For infrastructure applications, the specialty compounds are used in protective coatings for steel pipes transporting oil and gas at high temperatures, providing corrosion resistance and long-term performance in demanding operating conditions.
