LyondellBasell: Supplies Circulen bioPP for Shiseido packaging; secures permit for construction of Wesseling pyrolysis plant

LyondellBasell: Supplies Circulen bioPP for Shiseido packaging

Chemicals firm LyondellBasell (LYB) has announced the joint development of a new bio-based film packaging solution in collaboration with sustainable packaging maker Futamura Chemical, Iwatani Corporation, a Japanese trading company, and beauty produces supplier Shiseido. This cosmetic film packaging series partially incorporates LYB’S bio-based polypropylene (PP) polymer, CirculenRenew, in the outer packaging film of select products in Shiseido's Clé de Peau Beauté line.

CirculenRenew, with measurable and certified C14 renewable content, is another cornerstone of LYB’s Circulen sustainable solutions product family, with grades that can be used as drop-in solutions without requiring any modification of existing processing equipment.

“At LYB, our purpose is creating solutions for everyday sustainable living. We take pride in cooperating with Shiseido, Futamura, and Iwatani on this initiative, supporting brand owners in achieving their environmental targets and helping to reduce product carbon footprints in the beauty industry,” said Allen Yu, senior vice president of LyondellBasell, Asia Pacific.

Futamura Chemical is promoting the “SusFi” brand of packaging films and by collaborating with Shiseido and developing products using LYB CirculenRenew polymers, Futamura Chemical has expanded the “SusFi" brand family.

Meanwhile, Iwatani has set a target of handling 100,000 tonnes of bioplastics by the fiscal year 2027. As part of this effort, it is working closely with LYB to expand the bio-PP resin market in Japan.

In related news, LyondellBasell has received the first partial permit for the construction of its pyrolysis plant in Wesseling near Cologne in Germany and construction of the facility is already under way. The approval, which was made public in August, marks a significant step for the project, which aims to convert mixed plastic waste into new materials.

The plant's foundation stone was laid in September 2024, and the facility, which is still on track for commissioning in 2026, will use LyondellBasell's proprietary MoReTec technology to produce up to 30,000 tonnes/year of pyrolysis oil and pyrolysis gas.

These products will then be used as feedstock for manufacturing new plastics, helping to create a more circular economy for plastics.

The necessary plastic waste will be supplied by Source One Plastics GmbH, a joint venture between 23 Oaks Investments and LyondellBasell.

The plant is designed to be a novel facility for converting processed plastics from end-user waste into valuable resources, contributing to the broader goal of recycling and reducing waste.
