Expansions: Formosa Plastics commissions PP reactor in US; Lummus to license Synthomer’s acrylic acid esters technology

Formosa Plastics commissions PP reactor in US

Formosa Plastics Corporation has commissioned what it says is the “largest” horizontal PP reactor in North America at its Point Comfort, Texas, facility. With an annual capacity of 550 million pounds, this production line is poised to deliver a comprehensive portfolio of PP products to serve the diverse needs of the company’s growing customer base.

Based on technology licensed from Japan Polypropylene, the new reactor is engineered to produce a complete grade slate of high-quality resins, including homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer. This versatile production capability serves a robust range of key markets, from consumer goods and industrial packaging to automotive and specialty applications.

This additional capacity complements Formosa’s existing manufacturing operations to provide customers with enhanced production flexibility and supply chain assurance.

Furthermore, new commercial activities resulting from this domestic expansion are expected to create an additional sixty jobs for the community and bolster the surrounding Gulf Coast economy.

In other news, US technology provider Lummus Technology will license UK-based polymer firm Synthomer’s proprietary acrylic acid esters technology to enable Lummus to offer acrylic acid esters solutions.

Lummus to license Synthomer’s acrylic acid esters technology

This strategic collaboration combines Synthomer’s expertise and technological know-how in acrylic acid esters with Lummus’ global licensing capabilities and customer network. Lummus

adds it will offer robust solutions to produce acrylic acid esters, a key component in several high-performance applications, with the ability to utilise fossil-based or bio-based feedstocks. a variety of raw materials, including bio-based feedstocks.

“This agreement marks a significant milestone for Synthomer’s acrylate monomers business,” said Rob Tupker, President, Health & Protection and Performance Materials (HPPM) and Asia, Synthomer.

“Our technology, backed by years of experience and innovation, will now reach a broader market through Lummus’ licensing platform. It’s a win-win for both companies and the industry,” he added.
