Borouge International expands recycling capacity to boost circular materials supply
Austria-headquartered polyolefins company Borouge International is investing in its mechanical recycling facilities in Niedergebra, Germany, and Wildon, Austria, to increase European production capacity for recycled polyolefins. The expansion aims to meet growing customer demand for locally produced recycled materials amid brand preferences, evolving regulations such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and the need for more resilient supply chains.
At its Niedergebra facility, formerly mtm plastics, Borouge International will increase annual production of recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO) by nearly nine kilotonnes. The plant processes post-consumer mixed polyolefin waste into recycled materials for various rigid applications, with the additional capacity expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027.
At its Wildon facility, formerly Ecoplast, annual recycled polyethylene (rPE) production will increase by up to five kilotonnes. The additional capacity is expected to come on stream in the fourth quarter of 2027, primarily serving growing demand for recycled materials in flexible packaging.
Borouge International's European mechanical recycling portfolio also includes its facility in Elin Pelin, Bulgaria, which produces more than 20 kilotonnes of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) grades annually. Together, the facilities cover flexible polyethylene, rigid polypropylene and mixed polyolefin recycling.
The company also supplies circular materials in other regions. In North America, its Syndigo plant in Indiana, US, produces high-quality recycled polyethylene film grades, while in Asia, Borouge International works with a broad network of recycled material suppliers.
Dirk Langhammer, Senior Vice President of Circular Solutions at Borouge International, said circular materials are becoming an important resource for meeting sustainability and regulatory requirements while strengthening industrial competitiveness, brand differentiation and supply resilience. He added that the European investments would give more customers dependable access to circular polyolefin solutions, ranging from premium Borcycle grades to fit-for-purpose Recleo materials for various applications.
The investments form part of Borouge International's wider expansion of circular materials production, giving customers greater access to recycled polyolefins and helping build a more competitive and resilient materials supply chain.
