Zeon constructing R&D facility in Japan

Japan’s Zeon Corporation says it has started construction of a multi-product research and prototyping facility at the Kawasaki Innovation Frontier Port (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Designed to accelerate scale-up from R&D to mass production for both existing and new businesses, the new facility will play a key role in Zeon’s sustainable growth. The facility will be housed in an existing building in the R&D centre area of the Kawasaki Innovation Frontier Port, with operations expected to begin in January 2028.

The facility will incorporate the core technologies Zeon uses to make high-value-added products, such as its polymerisation, hydrogenation, coagulation, and drying processes, and is designed to accommodate a wide range of manufacturing conditions and operating methods. This will accelerate the transition from laboratory research to medium-scale sample production, helping bring products to mass production sooner. Zeon will leverage the facility to advance both its existing and new businesses.

As a polymer design company, Zeon also positions the facility as a hub for new technology development and a springboard for deploying new processes, operational technologies, analytical technologies, and measurement technologies both inside and outside the company. In the future, the facility will support the development and prototyping of a broad array of technologies, including prototypes produced in response to external commissions.

The Kawasaki Innovation Frontier Port is the collective name for the site encompassing the adjacent Kawasaki Plant and R&D Centre. The name symbolically emphasises its role in pioneering in the creation of new value through the integration of innovation, R&D, and production.

The new facility and the co-creative innovation facility, which is scheduled to begin operations in December 2026, will work seamlessly together to continuously develop higher-value-added products and advanced production technologies, it adds.

In other news, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical has begun construction of a new 1.2 million tonnes/year ethylene plant as part of a US$2.8 billion refinery and petrochemical upgrading project. Scheduled for completion by the end of October 2028, the project will replace the company’s existing 700,000-tonnes/year ethylene plant and upgrade its integrated refining and chemical operations within the current site, without acquiring additional land.

The overall program includes 15 new production units, upgrades to five existing units and the closure of 18 older facilities.

The project will maintain the site’s crude oil processing capacity at 14 million tonnes/year while shifting production toward higher-value chemicals, including high-end polyolefins and fine chemical feedstocks.

The new ethylene plant will use Sinopec’s proprietary LECT low-energy separation process to improve energy efficiency, material consumption and environmental performance.

Once operational, the upgraded complex is expected to supply nearly 3 million tonnes/year of high-end chemical and fine chemical raw materials, strengthen aviation kerosene supply and support demand from China’s new energy, packaging and advanced manufacturing industries.
