Green tie-ups: Agilyx/GreenDot in supply agreement for PS recycling feedstock; Solvay/Veolia inaugurate unit for recycling industrial flue gas treatment residues in France

Solvay/Veolia inaugurate unit for recycling industrial flue gas treatment residues in France

US-based Agilyxhas entered into an MOU with Germany’s DerGrunePunkt or GreenDot to source for polystyrene (PS) feedstock for chemical recycling. Under the collaboration, GreenDot, which processes over 300,000 tonnes/year of lightweight packaging, will supply waste PS feedstock to Agilyx´ Styrenyx plants for recycling into styrene monomer. The initial efforts are anticipated to produce up to 20,000 tonnes/year of customised plastic feedstock, suitable for applications targeted by Agilyx in the European Economic Area (EEA).

Agilyx will use its technology to convert the feedstock back to styrene monomers, with the intention to supply of the recycled styrene monomer to brand owner customers of GreenDot’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) business to help them in achieving the recycled content targets of the newly implemented Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Agilyx’s Styrenyx propriety pyrolysis technology for PS is currently used in a PS chemical recycling plant in Japan operated by Denka and Toyo Styrene. Agilyx and Ineos Styrolution America are also tying up to build a plant in Illinois, US.

Agilyx CEO Ranjeet Bhatia commented: “We are very pleased with this agreement and the synergy between GreenDot, an early mover in the European advanced recycling feedstock industry, and our Styrenyx plants, the industry´s first commercial solution for scalable recycling of waste polystyrene. We are excited to take this important step to establish a cost-effective, stable, and long-term sourcing partnership with GreenDot.”

DerGrunePunkt CEO Laurent Auguste commented: “We have unique access to high volumes of waste plastic through our existing programs, and the expertise and capacity to produce advanced recycling feedstock. Along with our rPE and rPP offering, providing our existing global brand customers with access to recycled polystyrene helps close the loop on their packaging needs”.

In other news, French firm Veolia and Belgian chemical firm Solvay, via their subsidiary Resolest, a specialist in the recycling of industrial flue gas treatment residues, recently inaugurated a new unit boosting the capacity of the Rosières-aux-Salines site in Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.

In line with the momentum initiated in 2024, this operation marks a major step in Resolest's development, which will be able to process and recover up to 50% more flue gas treatment residues per year.

Committed for over 20 years to building a more sustainable and circular industry at a regional level, the Rosières-aux-Salines site recovers the salt contained in the flue gas treatment residues obtained after the use of sodium bicarbonate. The salt is extracted in the form of purified brine, which then enters into the production of sodium carbonate by Solvay Dombasle's facilities in France.

Through this virtuous local loop, based on the innovation and know-how of Solvay and Veolia, waste is transformed into alternative resources, thereby enabling the preservation of natural materials.

A subsidiary of Veolia and Solvay Resolest is a key player in the treatment and recovery of flue gas treatment residues originating from the energy recovery of residual household waste and industrial boilers. The company transforms these residues into recycled salts that can be reused in industrial applications, thereby contributing to an ambitious, environmentally-friendly circular economy.

"For more than 20 years, Resolest has been a pioneer in the valorisation of material from residues deemed non-valorisable. With this extension, we are reinforcing our ability to produce reusable industrial salts, and to actively contribute to the preservation of natural resources," stated Jean-Michel Frada, Directeur de Resolest.

"The circular industry that we are helping to build every day alongside our partners, and notably Solvay, here in the Grand Est region, is not just a response to environmental challenges; it is a promise of innovation and efficiency where every solution is designed to create new resources and sustainable value for our customers and for the territories. It is a guarantee of competitiveness and sovereignty, for which Veolia now deploys all its expertise," added Jean-François Nogrette, Director of Veolia Zone France and Special Waste Europe.
