Green news: Indorama/PolySource to deliver specialty polymers to advanced applications; Avantium/Hordijk sign offtake agreement for PE

Indorama/PolySource to deliver specialty polymers to advanced applications

Thailand-based Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited has entered into a strategic distribution agreement with PolySource, a distributor of high-performance polymer solutions. The agreement, under Indorama Ventures’ Combined PET (CPET) segment, positions PolySource as an authorised distributor of specialty PET and PEN polymers across North America and key global markets.

This collaboration represents a key milestone for Indorama Ventures Specialty Polymers business, within the CPET Segment, as the company strengthens its footprint in the global specialty polyesters market. This partnership is set to expand access to cutting-edge specialty polymers designed for demanding applications in cosmetics, electronics, medical, defense, and industrial sectors: industries that demand precision performance, regulatory compliance, and innovation.

“We’re delighted to partner with PolySource, a company that mirrors our passion for innovation and customer success. This agreement allows customers greater access to our most advanced specialty polyesters, with the technical support and market reach of a proven partner like PolySource,” said Marc Potemans, Head of Specialty Chemicals, Indorama Ventures.

Customers can now source Indorama Ventures’ advanced co-polyesters more efficiently, through PolySource’s distribution channels and service capabilities, the companies add.

“Indorama Ventures offers some of the highest-performing polyesters on the market today,” said Damien Couch, Chief Development Officer at PolySource. “Combining that with our application expertise, we’re excited to bring smarter material solutions to engineers and designers across advanced industries.”

The agreement is in effect from June 2025, with both companies aligning on go-to-market execution and customer engagement strategies.

In other news, renewable materials firm Avantium NV has signed a capacity reservation agreement with Royal Hordijk, a Dutch producer of sustainable plastic packaging solutions. Under this agreement, Hordijk has secured volumes of Avantium’s 100% plant-based and recyclable polymer PEF (polyethylene furanoate) from future license plants for use in trays and injection-moulded packaging across a range of applications, including food, cosmetics, and other consumer goods.

PEF, marketed under the brand name releaf, offers a compelling combination of sustainability and performance. It is produced entirely from renewable feedstocks and is recyclable, making it a circular alternative to fossil-based plastics. PEF has a significantly lower carbon footprint than PET, glass and aluminium and provides superior barrier properties against oxygen, CO2 and water vapour. These features extend product shelf life and reduce food waste, while the mechanical features of PEF also enable lightweighting and design flexibility in packaging applications.

Hordijk is known for its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the packaging industry. By incorporating PEF into its product portfolio, Hordijk aims to further reduce the environmental footprint of its packaging while enhancing performance characteristics such as barrier properties and mechanical strength. The PEF to be supplied under this agreement is expected to be produced at future industrial-scale facilities licensed by Avantium. The multi-year capacity reservation ensures Hordijk preferred access to PEF volumes, supporting its long-term sustainability goals and enabling the development of next-generation packaging formats.

Hordijk is a family-owned company with over a century of experience in packaging innovation and manufactures plastic packaging solutions for the food, personal care, pharmaceutical, and horticultural sectors.
