Greenpeace urges accountability for single-use plastics in HK rivers
Greenpeace Hong Kong has urged the government to hold producers of single-use plastics {SUPs) more accountable after a large amount of plastic packaging from major drink businesses was found in the Pui O and Lam Tsuen rivers, making up 97% of waste collected over three months.
Although 95% of businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors have adapted to a single-use plastic ban, smaller operators face challenges. Greenpeace called out the lack of a clear timetable for expanding the ban and sought for more specific targets for plastic reduction. The government is working on a producer responsibility scheme but progress has been slow in regulating corporate plastic production.
