Dow announces award-winning innovators in packaging
Dow, a leader in materials science, announced the winners of the 35th Packaging Innovation Awards (PIA), a premier competition in the packaging industry, during an awards ceremony at Tokyo Pack 2024 in October. An international jury of 18 experts convened in Bangkok in June to evaluate submissions, selecting 28 winners based on criteria such as technological advancement, sustainability, and user experience.
According to Karen S. Carter, President of Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics, this year’s entries reflect the industry’s innovation in tackling global challenges, from materials that extend shelf life to designs that reduce waste. Hosting the awards in Asia underscores the region’s influence, with nearly half of submissions originating from Asian innovators in materials science and sustainable design, noted Bambang Candra, Dow’s APAC Commercial Vice President.
David Luttenberger, jury chair and global packaging director for Mintel, highlighted the introduction of a Special Award for emerging markets, celebrating innovation in mono-material packaging and showcasing new talent shaping the industry.
The 28 finalists were awarded across Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Special categories.
Panasonic Energy and Toppan Infomedia took the Diamond Award for a paper-based battery bag. Platinum winners included Gerdau Graphene’s graphene-enhanced packaging, CJ CheilJedang’s bio-circular Hetbahn packaging, and Upfield’s paper-based spread packaging. Gold and Silver Awards recognized innovations like Nestlé’s Cioccoriso Perugina bottle, ITC Limited’s recyclable biscuit bag, and Henkel Guatemala’s 100% recyclable detergent pouch. Special Awards went to Amcor’s AmPrima PE Plus coffee packaging and ITC’s Fiama handwash pouch, showcasing the industry’s shift toward eco-friendly, mono-material packaging.
