BASF boosts Neopor production capacity at Ludwigshafen
German chemical firm BASF is expanding its Neopor production capacity at its Ludwigshafen site by 50,000 metric tonnes per year to meet rising demand for energy-efficient insulation materials. The new facility is set to start operations in early 2027.
Neopor, a graphite-containing expandable polystyrene (EPS) developed by BASF, enhances insulation performance by up to 30% compared to standard white EPS. Classified as a "Pioneer" in BASF's Sustainable Solution Steering programme, Neopor supports BASF’s goal of enabling sustainable building practices.
With the EU targeting climate-neutral buildings by 2050, BASF expects demand for insulation materials to grow significantly. “A well-insulated building envelope is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving climate goals," says Dr. Klaus Ries, Head of Business Management Styrenics Europe at BASF.
BASF offers two Neopor variants with optimised sustainability profiles: Neopor BMB, which uses renewable raw materials, and Neopor Mcycled, which incorporates recycled EPS waste. Both options, REDcert2 certified, reduce the CO₂ footprint of buildings while maintaining high insulation quality.
