Alterra, Neste, and Technip Energies unite on standardised solution for chemical recycling
Alterra, Neste, and Technip Energies have signed a collaboration agreement to advance plastic circularity by offering a standardised solution for chemical recycling, or advanced recycling. The partnership will provide modular liquefaction plant solutions based on Alterra’s proprietary technology, reducing pre-investment costs, accelerating implementation, and lowering capital expenses. This solution aims to reduce reliance on virgin fossil resources and speed up the circularity of polymers and chemicals.
Alterra’s thermochemical liquefaction process converts hard-to-recycle plastics into liquid hydrocarbons, which can be refined into new raw materials. Neste has already processed over 6,000 tonnes of plastic-derived feedstocks, including certified oil from Alterra’s Ohio, Akron site.
The collaboration builds on previous partnerships. US-based Alterra and Helsinki-headquartered Neste began working together in 2021, while Alterra and France-headquartered Technip Energies teamed up in 2022. The three companies now aim to license Alterra’s liquefaction technology globally, with Technip Energies providing the modular plant design.
The solution offers a scalable, cost-effective approach to chemical recycling, helping meet growing demand for sustainable solutions and enabling faster deployment of recycling capacities worldwide.
