Arkema advances in biopolymers with new SG plant
Arkema, a global leader in Specialty Materials, has commenced the final phase of construction of the world’s largest bio-factory dedicated to high performance polymers. The plant, sited at Singapore on Jurong Island, will produce Arkema’s flagship Rilsan polyamide 11 material and its constituent monomer, amino 11, both 100% bio-based products derived from sustainably-sourced castor beans.
Rilsan polyamide 11 is used in many fast-growing sectors, including new energy vehicles, 3D printing, consumer goods, electronics, sports and medical, owing to the material’s superior properties and high performance in very demanding applications.
According to Arkema, the plant, which is expected to operate in 2022, will enable manufacturers across Asia to drive sustainability in their businesses, and to design recyclable, sustainable products from the outset.
Currently, the Marseilles, France-sited plant is the only one that manufactures amino 11, which supplies a global network of polymerisation facilities. With the Singapore plant Arkema will be able to increase its global Rilsan polyamide 11 capacity by 50%, it said.
Marc Schuller, CEO of Arkema said that the Singapore project is the company’s largest investment to date. Arkema’s total investment in the region, which also includes downstream polymer capacities in China, is approximately EUR450 million. The Singapore plant forms part of its overall strategic plan to become a pure player in specialty materials by 2024.
