Malaysia probes PET imports from China, Indonesia

Malaysia has started investigations into anti-dumping duty on imports of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) originating or exported from China and Indonesia, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

The investigation was initiated following a petition by a domestic producer, Recron (M) Sdn Bhd, for an anti-dumping duty investigation on imports of PET originating or exported from China and Indonesia, the ministry said in a statement.

The petitioner had alleged that PET imports from China and Indonesia were sold at a price much lower than their domestic selling price in the originating countries, the ministry said.

Recron further claimed that dumped imports from China and Indonesia have increased in terms of absolute quantity and have caused material injuries to the petitioner.

A preliminary finding will be made within 120 days from the start of the probe, the ministry said, without specifying when it began.

"If the preliminary determination is affirmative, the government will impose a provisional anti-dumping duty at the rate that is necessary to prevent further injury to the domestic industry," the ministry said.

Additionally, MITI will distribute a set of questionnaire and relevant documents to interested parties such as domestic producers, foreign exporters/producers of the subject merchandise in china and Indonesia, importers as well as the government of China and Indonesia.

Other interested parties who wish to participate in the anti-dumping duty investigation may request for the questionnaires in writing to MITI no later than 23 August.
