Hurricane Sandy leaves trail of destruction

While debates rage on about whether Hurricane Sandy is a result of nature wreaking it’s wrath or because of global warming, the weather phenomenon termed as “Superstorm” is expected to result in up to US$15 billion in damages in the US northeast, said to be comparable to Hurricane Irene in August 2011, according to authorities.

Besides the economic damage to properties, business disruptions (the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ were closed for two business days), more than 15,000 flights were cancelled and up to 50 people lost their lives with millions of people left without power; not forgetting that the US election campaign, with days to go before the countdown, came to a standstill.

Brazilian chemical firm also shut down its PP plant in Pennsylvania, while DuPont closed its headquarters in Wilmington and in seven sites in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
