Chinaplas 2019: plastics manufacturing on a trajectory growth path

Plastics consumption in China has increased by leaps and bounds, from 1 kg in 1980 to 65 kg in 2018, according to Chinaplas organiser Adsale Organisation’s Chairman Stanley Chu. But he added that it “still lags behind Europe, with further growth expected.”

Chu was speaking at a pre-Chinaplas 2019 media event in Guangzhou, a day before the start of the show.

Chu also pointed out that China is moving to higher technology manufacturing and that this was driving the plastics sector in the country.

He also said the GDP growth of the country will be around 6% this year, which is expected to be a new norm for China.

He added, “A series of favourable policies have been mapped out for 2019, including expanding the domestic consumption market, and nearly RMB2 trillion of tax cuts, which will be beneficial to the manufacturing industry; as well as more encouragement of foreign investment.”

Other changes to boost the manufacturing sector are the opening up of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay area for further manufacturing opportunities.

Furthermore, Chu touched on the 5G era that will be commercialised on a large scale in 2020; with infrastructure for implementation of intelligent technologies like big data, AI, VR and more. “This will allow the achievement of 5G high speed, huge capacity and low latency and there will be higher quality material requirements in the plastics sector for better performance,” he explained.

One of the themes of the Chinaplas show is the circular economy, which is relevant in the current scenario of the banning of plastic scrap imports by China in 2017.

“New scenes are emerging where leading renewable resources companies are expanding and recycling and environmental protection targets are being set by international giants.”

It is against this backdrop that the 33rd edition of Asia’s largest plastics show will be held from 21-24 May in Guangzhou, China.

The mega show features 3,615 exhibitors over 250,000 sq m of space, with around 180,000 visitors expected over the four days of the show.
