BMS to build PC sheet plant in China
German materials supplier Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) is building a solid sheet polycarbonate (PC) facility in Guangzhou, to target the market for diffusion lighting that is growing at 10% annually. To start up in 2012, the plant will have a capacity of 12,000 tonnes/year.
PC solid sheet is mainly used in producing optical application plates, machine covers, protection gear, architecture glazing, LED light box and other diffusion lighting applications.
The plant, part of BMS's EUR110 million investment plan to build five downstream facilities in China by 2012, will be its first for solid sheet in the country.
The company will produce mainly optical panels and solid sheets and is already planning to double the capacity by 2015. It is projecting that in 2015, China will need 155,000 tonnes of PC sheets - 65,000 tonnes for multiwall sheets and 90,000 tonnes for solid sheets.
BMS already has a facility in Beijing for making multiwall PC sheet, which is used in the construction of roofing and facades, while its facility in South Korea produces solid sheet.
