Canada comes down hard on BPA
C anada has become the first country to take action against bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in some plastic materials. The government has declared BPA a toxic substance and is in the midst of drawing up regulations for the chemical.
Indicating that it is the first country to take this bold step, the government also said in a statement that BPA may be harmful to both human health and the environment. BPA has been added to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which enables the development of regulatory risk management measures.
The country started its onslaught on BPA in 2008 when it banned PC baby bottles that contained BPA. Then last year, it issued a statement stating that BPA was not found to pose a health risk in bottled water, powdered infant formula and baby foods in glass jars with metal lids.
