Batch series production of auto parts
T o update their models, car manufacturers overhaul and replace minor details such as the case of the new VW Beetle, where the indicator was replaced with one containing a fog light. For pilot series production, Germany-based Modelllbau Robert Hofmann was able to supply 300 modules in 12 weeks, using rapid technology like LaserCUSING.
The aim was to develop a double group featuring halogen technology. For the third brake light, the specification was to supply a module with LED technology.
Hofmann undertook the preparation of moulds and used LaserCUSING (laser fusing with metal) of the parts of these three assemblies. Finishing techniques such as vapour deposition were also called on for the lighting elements and assembling of the finished components was also carried out.
The company says the parts produced match up, in terms of finishing, materials used and function, to a mass-produced moulded part. Whereas the development time for a comparable mass-produced part is around 25 weeks, Hofmann did in 12 weeks.
