Compostable bubble wrap and film
Australian supplier Cardia Bioplastics has launched a compostable bubble wrap that provides better protective performance compared to traditional bubble wrap. The firm's Biohybrid resin has also been used by protective packaging manufacturer Sealed Air for a new film.
Available in Europe, the bubble wrap is made from the company's certified compostable resin and can be used to transport perishable items such as fruit, vegetable, plants and flowers.
In the case of product spoilage, with the compostable bubble wrap companies can now dispose both the compostable packaging and perished item without the need to segregate. This offers environmental benefits and systems cost savings.
The compostable resins of Cardia comply with Europe EN13432, USA ASTM D6400, Australia AS4736, and Japan Green PLA standards.
In other news, the company's Biohybrid sustainable resin was chosen by Sealed Air, a protective packaging manufacturer for its new Fill-Air R5 inflatable packaging film.
For this collaboration, Cardia helped Sealed Air design a packaging that uses less petroleum-based resins while still maintaining the packaging's integrity. The resin combines renewable thermoplastics with polyolefin material. The renewable material is derived from corn crop grown for industrial use.
