Mitsui to pump up PP output in Thailand
Japanese resin makers Mitsui Chemicals and affiliate Prime Polymer are expanding capacity for PP compounds in Thailand to meet growing needs of the automotive sector. The companies will add on 18,000 tonnes/year, increasing capacity from 122,000 tonnes/year to 140,000 tonnes/year at the Grand Siam Composites site.
The new line is expected to come on stream in the third quarter of this year. In making the announcement, the company said that although the floods in Thailand last year temporarily affected the industry, the country is expected to regain momentum as the production and export trade hub for automotive related materials in the ASEAN. Its decision to increase production is aimed at meeting growing demand in automotive-related PP in Indonesia and neighbouring countries.
Mitsui is targeting further global expansion of PP compounds for automotive applications as a fundamental strategy of its 2011 Mid-Term Business Plan. This will encompass expansion of PP compound production in Japan, the US, Mexico, Europe, Thailand, China, and India..
