Borouge awards contract for XLPE unit
C
hemicals company Borouge has awarded a US$169 million contract to Hyundai Engineering and Construction of South Korea to build a 80,000 tonnes/year cross-linkable polyethylene (XLPE) unit at its petrochemical plant in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi.
The plant is an added-value complement to the low density PE unit, enabling the manufacture materials for voltage cable insulation. This is the final major contract to be awarded for the Borouge 3 mega-expansion project already underway at Ruwais in UAE.
Borouge 3 is expected to be operational in mid-2014 and will more than double the plant's annual capacity to 4.5 million tonnes/year, creating the largest integrated polyolefins plant in the world.
Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) and Borealis.
