Sumitomo caters to North China's automakers
J apan-based Sumitomo Chemical has set up a 50:50 joint venture with Chinese compounder Jilin Xindongtai Engineering Plastics to construct a 25,000 tonne/year PP compound facility in Changchun. It is also building a 10,000 tonne/year facility in Dalian to cater to North China.
Sumitomo has been actively expanding its PP business worldwide, establishing bases of operation in South China, Europe, North America, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. However, it says that Chinese automakers have rapidly been increasing their presence in the local market over the recent years, and serving these customers will be a key to success for the company to accelerate future business expansion.
The company's decision to establish a base of operations in partnership with a local company represents its new initiative to achieve this end. Xindongtai supplies PP and other compounds chiefly to state-owned First Automobile Works Group.
It also has another joint venture set up with Toyo Ink SC Holdings in 2005, Zhuhai Sumika Polymer Compounds, which operates a 22,000 tonne/year plant in Zuhai and will be involved in the Dalian plant too.
