No more BPA bottles in Malaysia next year
T
he Malaysian government will ban PC baby bottles containing bisphenol A (BPA), in stages starting now until next year.
At a recent press conference, Malaysia's Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the industry is given one year to comply with the decision by making changes to their machines and buying new raw materials. The minister also urged consumers to make the switch to bottles marked "BPA-free" since these are available in the local market now.
He said the decision for the ban was made as there was no scientific evidence that proved BPA baby bottles were safe for use by high-risk groups namely infants and children. Enforcement against retailers selling bottles containing BPA will start from March next year.
Other countries that have banned BPA milk bottles include Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and New York in the US.
