PU show in the right place and at the right time!

T

he balance of power has shifted as strongly in the PU industry, as in most areas of global business, with Asia now the world's driving force. The Utech Asia/PU China 2011 exhibition and conference is being held against this backdrop from 6-8 September in the Shanghai New International Convention Centre, Pudong, Shanghai.

Industry statistics confirm that China is now the world's leading manufacturer of PU-based products, with its output estimated at more than 5 million tonnes in 2010. According to Prof Weng Hanyuan, Vice Secretary General of the China Polyurethane Industry Association the country also has the fastest development and most potential globally.

And India will not be far behind. By 2020, its consumption could be a whopping 1,200 kilotonnes/year, according to Rahul Gautam, Chairman of the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPUA), while the smaller countries - now including Japan and Korea - will also see good growth, from their current levels of 616 ktpa and 448 ktpa, respectively. Japan's growth, while likely to be massively impacted by the recent earthquake and tsunami, should improve in the longer term as the re-building of its devastated communities begins.

The latest developments in the industry will be key topics for discussion during the Utech Asia/PU China show with specialised product seminars.

The exhibition is also almost sold out, with more than 100 of the leading suppliers showing their latest advances, including more than 50 global companies. A major presence from local suppliers such as Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes, Wuxi Chemicals and Nanjing Dymatic will be actively complemented by the large-scale involvement of all the major global players in the sector such as Bayer MaterialScience, BASF Polyurethanes, Dow and Huntsman. And all other suppliers of vital materials to the sector will be in Shanghai too, including Perstorp, Evonik, Momentive, as well as the vital machinery makers such as Cannon and OMS of Italy, Krauss-Maffei and Hennecke of Germany and regional firms including Sunkist of Taiwan, RoC, and DUT Korea.

The show is organised by Crain Communications, in partnership with the state-owned China MinMetals Group, headquartered in Beijing, and the China Polyurethane Industry Association based in Liming.
