MATERIALS NEWS
Partnership formed for TPU development
German firms Bayer MaterialScience and Solid Composites have joined forces to develop thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) powders for selective laser sintering. Suitable in high-volume production, this innovative method for fabricating 3Dstructures can be used for applications such as automotive, sports goods, robotics or aerospace engineering.
A spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), Solid Composites will be awarded a license to market the materials under the name Desmosint. The first of the TPUs is Desmosint X 92 A-1, which requires a constant temperature of only 80°C, in contrast to polyamide, for instance, that is processed at slightly below its melting temperature.
