High costs blow NPE out of Chicago
The triennial US plastics show, National Plastics Exposition or NPE, which had since 1971 been held in the American windy city of Chicago, is to move to the sunshine state of Orlando in 2012.

The venue change is expected to save up to US$20 million and comes against the back of rising costs of holding the exhibition at Chicago’s McCormick Place, said the organiser, the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI).

In a study it conducted, SPI says that holding NPE in Orlando would provide big reductions in the chief expenses incurred by exhibitors and attendees, such as 48% on utilities for booths; 19% on on-site hauling and rigging services for exhibitors; 23% on accommodation and 11% on travel. In fact, the savings on travel from the US Midwest – a key plastics manufacturing region, with Chicago at its heart – would be 19%.

Three other changes to the show include an earlier date of early April from the traditional late-June dates, which SPI says will allow more time for exhibitors to follow up on inquiries and leads generated before summer vacations. The second change is that instead of the traditional Monday opening day, NPE 2012 will start on Sunday, with educational programmes and other special events. The exhibition itself will run from Monday to Thursday, eliminating the sparsely attended final half-day of previous shows. Finally, SPI will address what it says is the long-standing wish of attendees and exhibitors that exhibits be grouped by product category.

The next NPE will take place from 1-5 April 2012 at the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando, Florida.
