Arburg to exit 3D business; cites weak demand

German injection moulding machinery maker Arburg is withdrawing from the additive manufacturing/3D (AM) business segment as of 31 December 2025, having been in the AM sector for 12 years, with the launch of the first machine at K2013, due to what it says is “the current economic situation” that requires it to concentrate on its core business of injection moulding machinery.

It adds that it will still provide support for existing customers and users of the Freeformer AM in terms of service and spare parts. However, Arburg will no longer participate in trade fairs/events related to AM.

Although the Freeformer industrial manufacturing system and the associated Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) production process caused a stir throughout the industry following the market launch at K2013 due to the technological features, it was not possible to realise the economic goals for this business segment in the long term, nor did the global 3D printing market develop as expected overall, the company adds.

"This business decision was made after careful evaluation and consideration of the current market situation and the current economic parameters," says Armin Schmiedeberg, Chairman of the Advisory Board at Arburg.

The approximately 40 employees of Arburg additive from sales, development, application technology and assembly will have the opportunity to transfer to Arburg, so that customers can continue to rely on competent contacts and long-standing experts.

In addition to the Freeformer for the production of functional components from original thermoplastic and elastomer plastic granulates, Arburg’s additive portfolio also includes the filament printers and silicone printers of Arburg's sister company innovatiQ GmbH + Co KG, based in Feldkirchen near Munich.
