TekniPlex Healthcare launches first biobased medical-grade PVC compounds
TekniPlex Healthcare has pioneered the development of bio-based, medical-grade PVC compounds, offering the healthcare industry a sustainable alternative without compromising on performance. As the first company to introduce bio-based compounds for medical plastics that match the properties of conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins, TekniPlex Healthcare’s innovation aims to lower carbon emissions significantly across a variety of healthcare applications.
The ISCC-Plus-certified bio-based PVC compounds are made with renewable energy and bio-attributed resins and plasticisers. The compounds provide a drop-in replacement for traditional PVC, ensuring compatibility with existing processes for injection moulding and extrusion across various medical uses.
The eco-friendly compounds are designed for a wide range of medical-grade applications, including tubing solutions like IV sets and peristaltic pump tubing, films for trays and bags, and other critical components. They offer the same chemical composition, functionality, and regulatory compliance as traditional PVC, supporting the healthcare sector’s push toward carbon footprint reduction.
Produced at TekniPlex Healthcare’s facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland, these compounds can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional PVC resins and by about 60% compared to traditional plasticisers.
