Green materials: Ascend launches PCR nylons, PET and calcium carbonate; Ineos launches bio-based acrylonitrile

Ascend launches PCR nylons, PET and calcium carbonate

US-based Circular Polymers by Ascend, a recycler of post-consumer carpet, has announced the launch of Cerene, a line of recycled polymers and materials made from the company’s proprietary carpet reclaiming technology. Cerene is available as PA6 and 66, PET, PP and calcium carbonate as a consistent, sustainable feedstock for many applications, including moulding and compounding.

Ascend Performance Materials, a fully integrated producer of materials and the majority owner of Circular Polymers by Ascend, is known for its innovations in PA6,6. Cerene will continue that legacy with offerings in PA6,6 while also bringing to market recycled polymers such as PA6, PET and PP.

Circular Polymers by Ascend converts post-consumer carpet into fibre and pellets. The company uses a proprietary process in its California-based facilities to achieve efficiency in recycling, successfully providing a new life for virtually every component of the carpet and backing. The company has redirected 85 million pounds of carpet from landfills into new goods since 2018.

Ineos launches bio-based acrylonitrile

In other news, Ineos Nitriles has launched its first bio-attributed product line for acrylonitrile. The new product is to be sold under the Invireo brand. Manufactured at Ineos Nitriles’ site in Cologne Germany, Invireo is made using bio-attributed propylene, which enables the replacement of fossil fuel resources.

The certification by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) and Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) allows the use of bio, bio-circular and circular feedstock into the supply chain according to a mass balance approach.

Mass balance is an essential tool used to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel materials as feedstock across a wide range of industries. In practice, it allows the mixing of renewable and recycled materials with traditional feedstock to create a lower-carbon product. It is recognized as a necessary step in arriving at a fully circular economy.

Invireo products are certified by ISCC Plus and RSB as delivering a 100% substitution of fossil-based propylene feedstock in its production system, enabling a lower carbon footprint compared to conventionally produced products, says the firm.

Acrylonitrile is essential to, and successfully used in, a variety of industrial applications such as wind turbines, automotive, aerospace, textile, chemicals for special applications and sporting goods.
