Sumika sets up in Poland; expands compounding capacity
Sumika Polymer, part of Japanese group Sumitomo Chemical, has set up a subsidiary in Poland, Sumika Polymer Compounds Poland, with a new production site of about 5,500 sq m will be dedicated to compounded PP manufacturing. This investment will provide 30,000 tonnes of additional capacity for the group and will increase European production capacity to 170,000 tonnes/year.
With historical locations in France and UK, as well as the recent acquisitions in Turkey and this creation in Poland, Sumika adds it is able to cover the whole of Europe and reduce carbon emissions from transport by delivering locally.
Demand for PP compounds in the area is expected to continue to grow solidly with the spread of electric vehicles (EV) due to the tightening of environmental regulations. The first step of the establishment will enable the hiring of about 30 new employees in Poland and the setting up of two compounding lines. The implementation includes the building of silos for the material storage and transfer. Start of production is scheduled to begin first quarter of 2022.
The new branch in Poznan, located in the west of the country, has easy access to the motorway network. One particular strength of the location is its proximity to their customers in Poland as well as in Germany and Czech Republic: a highly industrialised geographical area containing many manufacturers of automobiles and white goods appliances. Its overall expansion strategy is to promote adequate-sized units as close as possible to their business partners.
